South Korea ferry disaster: captain and crew accused of abandoning passengers

The parents of hundreds of children missing after Wednesday’s ferry accident off the coast of South Korea have accused the captain of the vessel of abandoning passengers after it emerged that he and six other crew members were among the first to leave the ship after it started to sink.

The captain, Lee Joon-seok, who is reportedly in his 60s, escaped from the 6,835-ton Sewol at about 9:30am on Wednesday, just 40 minutes after the vessel apparently ran aground and started to list severely. Full story

With the face all covered and just repeating “I am sorry” …he might be ashamed of what he did (and he should!). And legals actions should be taken although of course that will not remediate the tragedy or mitigate the pain of those hundreds of families

Why good pple have to die?! ㅠㅠ

I don’t really post things like this, but it’s quite sad how hundreds of teens around the age of us are missing or dying or even worse probably not even here on earth anymore and are resting in paradise. I’m very grateful that none of my relatives were on that ship, but it’s also possible that friends of my cousins could have been on that ship and I pray dearly for them. And to the class president who gave up his life jacket to his fellow classmate. God bless. Our world really needs people like you. I’m very sure your school and family would be proud of you. I love you all. Stay strong South Korea.

South Korea ferry disaster
Nearly 300 people were still missing Wednesday several hours after a ferry carrying 459, most of them high school students, sank in cold waters off South Korea’s southern coast, killing at least two and injuring seven, officials said. There were fears, however, of a big jump in the death toll, as dozens of boats, helicopters and divers scrambled to rescue passengers who had been on the ferry traveling to the southern tourist island of Jeju. One passenger said he believed that many people were trapped inside the ferry when it sank. (AP)Find more news related pictures in our photo galleries and follow us on Tumblr

Later news are so horrible I don’t know what to think ㅠㅠㅠ. Survivors said it was announced in the speakers of the ship a message telling them to not move because was dangerous. At the end the students who survived where the ones not following those orders and just made their way to the upper part of the ferry or toward the nearest exit to jump to the water. The thing that makes less sense is that after the message telling the kids to not move the personal of the boat jumped! …. now there is a big issue about those pple who survived because among the survivors more than half are not students (around 60 students)…honestly if am a parent of those poor kinds inside the ship I don’t know if I would just let those pple go easily u.u…

I agree with you on everything!
Lots of investigating to be done for sure. I just hope that nothing will be swept under the rug, and that the parents will get the answers they deserve. Cause this all sounds shady. Not all, just some parts.

The captain was interviewed and he keep on saying ‘sorry’.He may be sincere but its already done. Why u told the passanger stayed? Why the captain save his self first?
I wish it has a miracle. Pray and hope that more survivors be found and those being rescued are in safe and free from trauma.

if you go and read the comments now under the news regarding this tragedy you will find all kind of courses to the captain and the rest of the ship personal that survived like: “if you already lived 60 years (pointing that most of the survivors are not students) your priority should be try save the lives of those kids, no jump on your own” or “would be better to die doing something good instead of saving your own skin”. Is kinda unfair that kind of thinking if you are family of the ship crew, but in my personal opinion I concur with those nitizens. Ikd … u.u But yeah, what is the point now that damage is done and there is no return point. In the ‘good news’, I heard around 40 people might be alive still inside the ship (that was around 1pm korean time) and they were sending messages. I hope at least they could be rescue alive natwalan:
